Listening to Mothers Initiative

Home ›› Breast Pumping FAQ's

childbirth logoWe at GotBreastPump.com have become keenly aware of the challenge that new mothers have, when they begin breast feeding and breast pumping. Even today, many, many hospitals do not offer nearly enough information or help with breast feeding or breast pumping, before or after birth.

Mothers write to us all the time, asking questions that their doctors can’t answer, about breast milk production. At the GotBreastPump.com website, we answer these questions from our own personal experience, expertise and training in the field of breast pumping and breastfeeding.

We do lots of research at GotBreastPump.com. And we have found that far too many women feel powerless, ill informed, and unprepared for breast feeding and/or breast pumping, during and following the birth of their baby.

We recently found a national survey about women’s maternity experiences. This is the first survey of its kind. The information from the this survey attracted so much attention and caused enough change, that it continued and even amended to fit the emerging voice of mothers.

Listening to Mothers Initiative I survey and report (2002), was the first national survey that focused the discussion of maternity care, in the U.S., on the people who care about it most: mothers themselves. The survey examined many aspects of the maternity experience that have never been documented at the national level. It provides a far more complete understanding of U.S. women’s maternity experiences than has been previously available.

Following this first survey came Listening to Mothers II survey and report (2006). This second survey and report documented the results of the first, expanded their research on the topics of the first. But, it also added new, important things that mothers were concerned about.

The first two surveys created lots of action and attention. BUT, notice the newest survey, New Mothers Speak Out report (2008). It makes a quantum leap by giving mothers a true voice. This report shares how mothers really feel about hot, relevant topics to birth and post partum.

Many of us have read or heard about mothers who do not get the type of attention needed during birthing and post partum. We’ve all heard about Post Partum Depression, yet doctors and hospitals don’t have the time or resources to really prepare a mother or help her following birth with this and other super important issues. New Mothers Speak Out report (2008) gives the low down from real mothers with the same real problems that most mothers are concerned about. Get the report at www.childbirthconnection.org. Next time you sit down to breast pump for your baby, read these reports. This information could help you with your future pregnancies or those of your family and friends.
