Breastfeeding Before the Baby Comes

Okay, the baby isn’t here yet, why do I need to worry about breastfeeding at this point. Well, breastfeeding is one of the most important aspects of raising a newborn. You have heard numerous times that breast milk is best for your baby, so you need to make all necessary arrangements to be prepared for breastfeeding when that time comes.

The first thing you will need to do is make sure that you are familiar with everything associated with breastfeeding – such as when to begin, how to hold the baby, how do you know if baby is getting enough, and what to do if you are having problems. One of the most important things to realize about breastfeeding is that it is not something that is easy or just comes natural. It is something that you must be determined to do and get some great support systems to encourage you through the process; one really great resource is the La Leche League website.

The great thing about breastfeeding is that there are so many resources out there to help you through the process of learning breastfeeding. As you are going through your pregnancy you will begin to learn about your hospital, understand the delivery process, take Lamaze courses, and during this time you should find out where you can learn more about breastfeeding. The hospital where you will deliver your baby will most likely provide classes about breastfeeding. If you are unable to find these classes, you can ask your ob/gyn to give you advice about where to get further information in your area about breastfeeding your baby.

The next thing to do is to discuss your choice to breastfeed with family and friends and inform them that you will need their support in this endeavor. Some may be disappointed because it may exclude them from feeding the baby themselves for some time. However, you can certainly educate them with other activities that they would able to participate in with the baby. In addition to many resources for yourself about breastfeeding, there are also resources for family and friends to help them better understand why it is so important for you to breastfeed the baby.

One of the fun steps in preparing to breastfeed is buying the great things that are pretty necessary to make your breastfeeding adventure more comfortable and convenient. You will need to shop for things such as nursing bras, shirts and tanks, breast pads, and necessary things like lanolin.

Another important thing to consider in preparing to breastfeed is what type of breast pump would be most suitable for you. Many mothers don’t think about needing a breast pump until the moment they need it. It is important to realize that you will need a breast pump at some point after the baby is born, whether for an occasional use – to pump extra breast milk for a evening out on the town, or full time use – once it is time to return back to work. These are things that must be considered prior to purchasing a breast pump.

So, as important as breastfeeding is for your baby, make sure that you are prepared for that incredible time in your life.
