WIC Encouraging Breastfeeding?

October 5th, 2009

Because we donate breast pumps to moms, we do encounter some wonderful mothers that find themselves needing to use the services of WIC.  I have never had to deal with the program myself, however, knowing that they do service many moms and babies, I have recommended that some moms look into their services.

I was unaware of how the program worked, but assumed that considering the need, then there were be a federal program or more of a unified program.  Yet, looking at this article from KCUR.org, it appears that each WIC does it own little thing.

Reading the article, I was upset with the wording that they used, hopefully it is the wording that I am worried about.  The article states that they are going to do a much greater encouragement of breastfeeding among the mothers.  Yet, the mother’s who do breastfeed will get an “enhanced” food package, which will include more fruits and vegetables.

I am certainly one to encourage moms to breastfeed as long as they can.  However, should we not allow a mother to receive healthy foods because she does not or cannot breastfeed?  It seems that they could find a different way to encourage moms to breastfeed than holding back healthy foods from those who do not.  Don’t we all need to eat healthier, or have the opportunity to, rather than it be using as give and take?

Ameda Mother's Milk Freezer Bags

September 2nd, 2009

Many moms who are true Ameda breast pump fans really enjoy these breast milk bags.  That is why it is rated number 4 out 6 on the 6 most popular bags.  It is very different from the other bags in that it is not have a zipper seal at the top.  It used, as some moms say, a more time-consuming method of clipping the top and rolling down to get all of the air out.  So, though, it is more time-consuming, it is much more effective of keeping air out of the bag.

Another great point about this breast milk bag is that it easily attaches to the breast pump shield while you are breast pumping instead of using a bottle at any point.  Also because of this method of closure, there seems to be no complaints of leaks or breakage of the milk bag.

A box of 20 pre-sterilized bags can cost between $9.95 and $11.99.

This bag:

  • holds 6 oz. of milk
  • is pre-sterilized
  • is self-standing design keep the bags from tipping over
  • contains twist ties to easily use with the breast pump

These are not re-useable, therefore can get somewhat costly.  Some moms have complained that the ounces on the bag are not easy to be read once you fold down the bag to close it.

Next, we will discuss Gerber Seal N Go Breastmilk Storage Bag.

The “Big Boy” Shirt

August 12th, 2009

Today Seth starts 5th grade – or middle school, as they call at his school.  So, now, he gets to wear the big boy shirt.  Prior to this, he wore a cotton polo shirt that made him so precious.  Now he wears a short-sleeve button-down that he doesn’t love.

“Why does it feel so funny?” he asked this morning.  “It’s so stiff and hard,” as he tried to configure the collar.  This must lend a lot to my mothering skills and the fact that I never make my children wear formal clothing. The guys in my family even wear short-sleeve polo shirts to Easter Mass.

I concluded this morning’s conversation by informing him that men still like to torture themselves by wearing ties and long-sleeve dress shirts in the summer.  Why our society still requires this sadistic manner of dress is beyond me, but he sure did look handsome going to school today.

Freemies – Hands-free Collection System

August 6th, 2009

A new invention has been created for breast pumping moms, Freemies.  These are interesting little containers that you pop into your bra, attach your breast pump tubing to it, and voila, your breast milk goes straight into the containers in your bra.

The mom behind this new gadget had to return to work as an ER doctor after giving birth to her child.  So that she could continue to breast pump, but quickly get to patients if needed, she asked her husband to create something that she could use discreetly, but in public.

Each container holds 4 ounces and they cost $69.95.   The website has many videos to demonstrate how to use them, Freemie.com.

Freemies have just come onto the market after 5 years of research and development.  Because they are so new, it was difficult to find out how moms are enjoying these new breast pumping containers.   Let us know if you have used these and what you think about them.
