I also exclusively pumped for similar reasons. I did it for a year w/each of my two kids. Its a lot of hard work but completely doable. I never actually had any guilt. I was and am so proud of myself for doing it. My babies got the best nutrition and I worked my ass off to do it for them. I encourage pumping. It can allow a lot more freedom for mom and maybe keep her breastfeeding longer.

I fought tooth and nail against healthcare professionals who believed I couldn’t do it, and yet managed to do it for 6 months each for my two (now they are 2 and 5! eep)

I am a control freak and needed to know how much my child was feeding and when, and so exclusive pumping was the only way for me to be stress free. I decided to do that for the first 6 months of their lives, and I did.

Thanks for all this info Wendy, I am currently in the breast feeding process right now and your website has provided me some great tips. Fenugreek has also worked for me ,as well as this tea. It was quite painful at first because it was producing so much milk and swelling my breasts, but it worked and helped produce more milk than I asked for.

This is a nice way to share something that they could cherish. There are babies that are in need of breast milk that most mom can’t BF. In some countries there are those campaign to help moms who can’t give their child nourishment that a breast moms could have but they are actually screened first before distributing to those babies.

Congrats for your new baby! With as much milk that you are getting, you are certainly getting plenty of hindmilk for your baby. When you are pumping there is not really a good way to tell how much you have of each. Within the first few minutes of pumping, you will notice that the milk is thin and bluish, once the hind milk starts coming out, the milk is thicker and more yellowish. But you seem to be doing a great job – keep it up!

My baby is 2 1/2 weeks and I’m pumping every four hours during the day and I give myself one six hour period in the night.

I’m getting a lot of milk at each pumping (approximately 8 – 10 oz), but I’m a little worried about the amount of hindmilk that is coming out. Is there any way to tell how what is foremilk and what is hindmilk?
