The “Big Boy” Shirt

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

Today Seth starts 5th grade – or middle school, as they call at his school.  So, now, he gets to wear the big boy shirt.  Prior to this, he wore a cotton polo shirt that made him so precious.  Now he wears a short-sleeve button-down that he doesn’t love.

“Why does it feel so funny?” he asked this morning.  “It’s so stiff and hard,” as he tried to configure the collar.  This must lend a lot to my mothering skills and the fact that I never make my children wear formal clothing. The guys in my family even wear short-sleeve polo shirts to Easter Mass.

I concluded this morning’s conversation by informing him that men still like to torture themselves by wearing ties and long-sleeve dress shirts in the summer.  Why our society still requires this sadistic manner of dress is beyond me, but he sure did look handsome going to school today.

Freemies – Hands-free Collection System

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

A new invention has been created for breast pumping moms, Freemies.  These are interesting little containers that you pop into your bra, attach your breast pump tubing to it, and voila, your breast milk goes straight into the containers in your bra.

The mom behind this new gadget had to return to work as an ER doctor after giving birth to her child.  So that she could continue to breast pump, but quickly get to patients if needed, she asked her husband to create something that she could use discreetly, but in public.

Each container holds 4 ounces and they cost $69.95.   The website has many videos to demonstrate how to use them, Freemie.com.

Freemies have just come onto the market after 5 years of research and development.  Because they are so new, it was difficult to find out how moms are enjoying these new breast pumping containers.   Let us know if you have used these and what you think about them.

Breast Milk Storage – Is My Precious Breast Milk Spoiled?

Monday, August 3rd, 2009

This seems to be one of the most popular questions around. How do I know if my breast milk is spoiled? Everyone is terrified to possibly feed their sweet baby something that could make them quite sick. Well, nature has been good to us very busy moms.

When I began working again after my maternity leave, I brought my baby to work for about a week to ease the transition some. Since I was at work for only a couple of hours, I brought one bottle from home and let Gabrielle suck on it intermittently between her bouts of sleeping.

A co-worker of mine came into my office and was horrified to see the same bottle 1½ hours after the first time that she saw. Being an avid exclusive breastfeeding mom, she promptly told me that I had let the breast milk spoil and Gabrielle was going to get sick. I was just mortified. How could I have been so careless? I had been allowing the breast milk to sit out a couple of hours thinking that it wouldn’t hurt Gabrielle. I actually drove home crying, thinking what a terrible mother I was to allow my baby to drink spoiled breast milk.

Well, when I got home, I began researching how store breast milk and how long milk could be stored at various temperatures. As I said earlier, nature is good to us. Gabrielle was in no danger at all. It turns out that breast milk can stay out at room temperature for 8-10 hours. Even though Gabrielle was a slow eater, I never let the breast milk stay out 8 hours. But, for moms that accidentally leave the breast milk out for an extended period, be aware that the milk is probably just fine.

In addition to the room temperature time, you can store breast milk in your refrigerator for up to 8 days. Now, some place that moms may get confused in with freezer storage. You must be careful with freezer storage. If you are storing breast milk in your refrigerator/freezer, the breast milk is only safe for up to 3 months. I think many moms think that since it is in the freezer, then it is good for up to 6 months. However, if you store the breast milk in a separate deep freeze, the breast milk is safe to use up to 6 months or longer.

So, to conclude:

room temperature – up to 10 hours

refrigerator temperature – up to 8 days

refrigerator/freezer temperature – up to 3 months

freezer deep freeze – up to 6 months.

Happy 40th Birthday To Me!

Monday, August 3rd, 2009

Well, I turned 40 last Friday.  And it was absolutely fabulous!  I wasn’t expecting to feel any different, but I actually did.  I don’t know if I feel happier or more satisfied, but I feel like this is a whole new decade that I have to conquer.

The 20’s were great, but that decade was spent working hard at becoming an adult.  I loved my 30’s also, but that decade kept me working hard at the parent that I was to become.

But, now, I feel like my 40’s are when the fun can happen.  Get ready 40, here I come.
