10 Ways to Increase Breast Milk Supply – Oatmeal

Oatmeal is a great standard (no side effects)

Oatmeal is #4 on GotBreastPump.com’s list of 10 Ways to Increase Breast Milk Supply. Breast milk supply boosters are needed by most breast pumping and breastfeeding mothers at some time or another.

Oatmeal is so easy and inexpensive. It is a comfort food, as well as a galactagogue. There is little research done on the effectiveness of oatmeal as a galactagogue, but ask any nursing or pumping mom. Most all will attest to how helpful oatmeal is to breastmilk production.

I ate oatmeal almost every day for breakfast or snack. Since I love oatmeal, I always kept it around. I had very few problems with my breastmilk supply but when I did, I made sure to eat some oatmeal. If I needed a breastmilk supply booster, I ate oatmeal two or three times a day, until my milk supply was back to normal.

Adding more oatmeal would usually help boost my milk supply within a couple of days. Even when I was able to boost my milk supply back to normal with oatmeal, I would remember to eat it each day.

The holidays are coming, so even when you might over indulge in treats, it is good to keep the oatmeal at hand. Stress and poor eating habits during the holidays can take a toll on breastmilk moms.

Oatmeal is a complex carbohydrate, which have a calming effect. It is also high in water soluble fiber. We can all use both of these health benefits during the holiday family fun and feasting.

Go ahead and cook or microwave a steaming bowl of delicious oatmeal. Tomorrow, you could boost your milk supply that fast, with something we all love to eat.

My Breastmilk is drying up, HELP PLEASE!

Monday, November 24th, 2008

Hello ladies at GotBreastPump, I need your help.

I had a baby six months ago and I have a lot of milk stored in the freezer. I want to avoid using it yet. I did stop regular breastfeeding a couple of months ago.  I’m not sure why my baby stopped wanting to go to breast, but she is still getting breastmilk.

I have been pumping every 3 to 4 hours but I only get about 5 ounces.  It is never the same amount when I pump. It has been about two weeks since my milk supply began to fall off.

My goal is keep up my breast milk supply or maybe increase it.

Can you help me please? I will use any advice that you give me.

Thanks from Brenda in Aspen

Dear Brenda

Thank goodness you were wise enough to store up so much breast milk.  Some important things to consider:

Night pumping is super important.  Most successful pumpers state that although they would love to stop night pumping, they do it usually 2 times per night.  There is good reason for night pumping.  The hormone Feedback Inhibitor of Lactation (FIL) signals the mammary glands to slow or stop production when large gaps exist in pumping/feeding times.  Missing pumping sessions for 8 hours or more set FIL into action.

Stress, low fluid consumption, poor nutrition and some other factors can also impact breast milk supply.

If you hae been missing some night feedings, try a schedule of:

10PM, 1AM, and 4AM

By the 7AM feeding, you may actually already see an improvement in quantity of breast milk, certainly by the next morning.  The change in volume is usually noticed in the first morning feeding.

A lactating mother’s hormones are complex but will respond very quickly to the changes in pumping/feeding.

You can also begin taking More Milk Plus Vegetarian Capsules or Fenugreek Capsules to help increase your breast milk supply.  Both of these products have helped many mothers bring back or increase their breastmilk supply.

Our web store has these products available right now and can be shipped out today with FREE PRIORITY shipping if ordered by 1PM.

Don’t Make the Costly Mistake of Using Formula

The frenzy of the holidays can cause us to become so harried that we sometimes forget what’s really important.  Giving up breast pumping or breastfeeding because of the holiday season can have obvious and hidden costs.

Yes, it is easy to pick up a few cans of formula with the groceries and not notice the expense.  But way too soon, the cost of the formula adds a hefty burden to the family budget. Once a baby starts formula, the daily cost $5 to $6 every single day.  That is over $150 each month.

Now, for the hidden costs of babies on formula.  Formula fed babies get sick more often.  Kaiser Permanente states that formula fed babies cost, on average, an extra $1,400 per year in additional office visits, prescriptions and hospitalizations.

How many families can truly afford to pay over $3,000 in a year for something that does not have to cost even $1.  Breastmilk is basically free.

The inconvenience of buying formula, taking your sick baby to the doctor and the sadness of having your baby ill are such an awful price to pay for giving up breast pumping or breast feeding.

Consider well before giving up on breastmilk during the holidays.  Your baby needs you during the holidays.

A Mother Needs Help

Please help. My baby is six weeks old.  I have inverted nipples so I decided to breast pump and bypass all the problems.  I haven’t established a good schedule, but I do pump every 2-3 hours but my breast milk supply does not seem to fill my baby up. I do pump until no milk comes out any longer.

My milk supply is still not enough, so I am giving my baby formula to supplement.

I think the More Milk Plus Vegetarian Capsules will help, but at the same time, I want to know what kind of pumping schedule I need, especially when I go back to work. Thank you very much.

Momma Toni Says

You are wise to set up a schedule.  Regular pumping is important to maintaining milk supply.

You are at an important benchmark in breast milk production.  Prolactin will now be predominantly controlling you milk production. One other hormone plays a fair sized role in breast milk production, also.  This hormone FIL play out at the night feedings. Without 2 night feedings, the hormone FIL will signal to your mammary glands

To slow or stop milk production.  Skipping night feedings is one of the most common reasons mothers have milk supply problems.

So this brings us to a schedule.

You can adjust this schedule to you biological clock. (earlier waking or later bed time) Avoid skipping the midnight and 3 AM feedings.

Waking AM to Noon

6 AM, 9 AM, 12 Noon

Afternoon to Midnight

3 PM, 6PM, 9 PM, 12 Midnight

Wee Hours (A Must!)

3 AM

Yes, the More Milk Plus Vegetarian Capsules will help, since they are a galactogue that helps increase breast milk supply fast.

Check out our site for the More Milk Capsules and lots more tips for maintaining milk supply.

I hope this helps, please email again if you need any more ideas.

10 Ways to Increase Breast Milk Supply – Water

Monday, November 10th, 2008

Can We Help You Increase Your Breastmilk Supply?  Yes, We Can!

For the next week and a half, we at Got Breast Pump.com will elaborate on each of the 10 Ways to Increase Breast Milk Supply. Number one, water, is the easiest to fix and most common reason mothers have for low milk production.

Water – always make sure to get plenty of water during your breastfeeding or breast pumping experience. If you need a way to increase breast milk supply, you will be surprised just how quickly your supply will increase when you getting plenty of water in your system. The Mayo Clinic recommends that lactating women consume 3.1 liters (about 13 cups) of fluids a day.

A busy, exhausted new mother can easily forget to drink ample fluids to keep her breast milk supply up. Usually the first indicator is when breast milk supply gets low.

Not only do you need to drink enough for yourself, but the amount your baby consumes in breast milk. Other seasonal considerations impact your water intake as well. In the summer it is easy to dehydrate due to high temperatures. In the winter, dry air steals fluids from your body.

Thirteen cups of water sounds like a lot of liquid. But if you think about it, it is not only achievable, but you do it most days. Most water glasses hold 12 ounces. You only need to drink 8 and 1/2 water glasses of liquid each day.

By drinking juices, herbal teas, milk and water, you can easily consume enough fluids to increase and maintain your milk supply.
