Well, we have to face facts. A majority of us will have to supplement our breast milk at some point, whether it is 10 months, 10 weeks or 10 days. More than likely your baby will have to drink baby formula to continue to get all the nutrients she may need.
First thing to realize, you do not have to feel guilty about feeding your baby formula. I remember when I had to first supplement my breast milk with baby formula; I was horrified. I tried desperately to figure out how I could increase my breast milk, but nothing worked. The first week that I added baby formula to her breast milk, I truly believed that she was sick. I imaged red splotches on her little face, congestion that wasn’t really there. I knew she had to be sick from that baby formula. But guess what? It was all my imagination. She did perfectly well with the formula. She seemed to enjoy it just as much as her breast milk, and, yes, she continued to grow just beautifully.
We have to realize that baby formula today is made very well, and babies who are given formula grow up to be very healthy. Most of our generation was brought up on baby formula, which was much less nutritious than it is today, and we turned out very healthy and productive adults.
So, in the end, do not feel guilty. Providing your baby with as much of your own breast milk is the most wonderful thing that you have done for your baby, but when it is time to begin supplementing, just look for the right formula for your baby. She will appreciate all that you have done for her and will know that you are a great mother.
